To live longer, adopt a plan to nuts!

Spanish researchers found that eating nuts can reduce the risk for certain diseases. And if it was possible to live longer by eating nuts?

A longitudinal study which involved 7,000 Spaniards over 50 years showed that people who ate all kinds of nuts (hazelnuts, cashews, Brazil ...) more than three times a week reduced their risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer compared to people who do not eat at all.

Lovers nuts also had evidence of lower body weight and a slimmer waist, were more active and less likely to smoke. Their diet was also more balanced, with more fruits, vegetables and fish, as some people fond these "fruits".
Eaters of nuts had a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and hypertension. In the end, their mortality risk was lowest at 39%, while the nut lovers in particular had an even lower risk of 45%.
Those who ate more than three servings (one serving = 28 g) per week reduced their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 55% and cancer by 40%.

"We do not know exactly how nuts prevent premature death or why the fruit of the walnut would be better for health than other nuts," said the study author Jordi Salas-Salvadó, the Rovira i Virgili University of Tarragona (Spain). "The fruit of the walnut is rich in alpha-linolenic acid and organic chemical compounds (mostly found in the skin) to the beneficial health effects such as fiber and minerals (calcium, magnesium and potassium) it contains."

Other studies had linked these nuts with other virtues, especially against bad cholesterol or even improve sperm quality.
